Photographer Evad Slade could be called a "big picture" thinker. His photos of New England vistas will be on display in the Square at Nantucket starting at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, through mid-February. The opening will be celebrated from 2 to 4 p.m. SLT, and Phoe Nix will play from 2 to 3.
"I started out as a photographer of archetectural details and moved up to wider views," Slade said. "You look at a closeup of a flower and you see a nicely designed act of nature captured by the photographer. Look a wide landscape and a memory may be conjured up by the viewer."
The viewers of this month's display will see rugged mountains, sweeping skylines, lush forests. but nothing to suggest the ocean.
"I guess I'm more of a mountain/country person than a "seacoast" one," he said. "Also it might have something todo with a fear of water, so I prefer landscapes, barns and their stories within their details."
Slade focused on advertising and illustration photography in college and then became reinspired a decade ago with advances in digital photography. He has been influence by photographer Walker Evans, and Evan's works will headline an exhibition of photography at his Studio 240 Gallery in Mystic.
"Since I first discovered Second Life back in 2005, I've sensed it to be a great venue for interactive (immersive) education ... and a showplace for artists." He said. Ht took a break from SL and returned reinvigorated in 2007. "My reinsertion into the virtual world coincided with the strength of my love for photography. Having sat behind a desk until then, I hadn't had the time to exhibit, so SL was a perfect venue for me."
For those who want more of Slade, access to his past shows is gained through wall positings in his gallery.
Slade's virtual interests run more toward machinima rather than photography, and he is developing ideas for immersive fiction.
As for the story behind his first life photos, "I like to think that each image tells its own story. The viewer fills in the blank,." he said.
Nix, the opening's musical guest, started singing in choirs in her native Singapore and progressed to a position as the singer for a London-based electro-rock band. In SL, Nix goes acoustic, using her ethereal voice and piano in a souldful and jazzy style for covers and original songs.
